What makes tissue paper recyclable
Three things decide whether a sheet ends up recycled or in landfill:
- The pulp. Virgin FSC or recycled kraft pulp goes back into the paper stream easily. Blended synthetic fibres do not.
- The coating. Uncoated tissue is straightforward. Foil-laminated, wax-coated or plastic-lined sheets have to be separated at a specialist facility — most kerbside collections can't handle them.
- The contamination. Food grease, sticky tape and heavy ink coverage lower the value of the recovered fibre. A lightly printed logo is fine; a sheet soaked in oil is not.
GSM weight and recyclability
Weight doesn't change whether tissue is recyclable, but it does change how it's treated in UK material recovery facilities (MRFs):
